Gurkha Cigars - The Quick History Behind The Brand

Gurkha Soldiers Northwoods Humidors

During the war of 1814, a group of Nepalese soldiers known as Gorkhali tenaciously battled the HEIC, a joint-stock company formed by the British Empire in order to trade in the Indian Ocean. The Gorkhali soldiers made such an impact on the British that they were later recruited for the British Army who referred to them as “Gurkhas”. Still being an integral part of the British Army, the Nepalese soldiers have loyally fought for the British all over the world, receiving 13 Victoria Crosses between them. The name Gurkha has since been used to reflect the ideologies of some of the fiercest warriors on the planet. One in particular is a cigar brand created almost a century ago in Miami, Florida.

Also known as the 'Rolls Royce of cigars, Gurkha is enjoyed by many of the world's elite including members of royalty, military, leading government officials, and celebrities. The company was formed in 1989 when a savvy businessman by the name of Kaizad Hansotia acquired the brand for only $149. Today, Gurkha produces eight million cigars per year, selling their tasteful stogies to more than 58 countries worldwide. Their more popular collections are limited editions known for rare tobacco products with outstanding and artistically-oriented packaging.
